The biden administration on monday announced a goal to produce 50 million metric tons of clean hydrogen fuel by 2050 – a roadmap that, if successful, would cut around 10% of the country’s planet-warming pollution by the same date. For the us to transition to clean energy, it will take technologies beyond wind and solar to fuel airplanes , generate electricity and power industry. And the biden administration is increasingly looking towards hydrogen to meet the demand – a source of energy that burns without pollution and that can be derived from water. But it also could be generated by the fossil fuels it seeks to replace.

At the venice refinery, we are evaluating the implementation of the waste to hydrogen project, based on an innovative gasification technology: a process for the production of sustainable hydrogen through the gasification of non-recyclable waste, i. E. Plasmix¹ and css ², waste that is currently used in waste-to-energy plants or sent to landfills. This process enables the production of sustainable h₂ in synergy with refining plants, helping to reduce emissions associated with conventional waste treatment and conventional hydrogen production.
With an on-site gasification system for hydrogen production, a 90% saving in greenhouse gas emissions is achieved compared to hydrogen production by steam reforming.

Achieving zero emissions by 2050 will require a wide range of technologies and the transformation of infrastructures. Energy efficiency, paradigm shifts, renewable energies and new technologies will have to take their part. Already acclaimed for its many advantages and supported by many states which are investing strongly to democratize its uses and achieve their low-carbon objectives in the years to come, hydrogen represents a real opportunity to accelerate the energy transition.
Raw materials are needed for hydrogen technology (and several other renewable energy technologies) so the discussion also expands to “material security”. Some 30 raw materials are used for fuel cells and hydrogen storage technologies (european commission, 2020b). While geological supplies of most minerals and metals are presently sufficient, markets are bound to tighten with rapidly rising demand and long lead times in mining and refining projects. Meanwhile, other technologies may come along to compete with hydrogen over available quantities of critical materials. Even if countries are able to produce their own hydrogen and so improve energy independence, they may depend on a limited number of countries for necessary raw materials.
Water can be separated into oxygen and hydrogen through a process called electrolysis. Electrolytic processes take place in an electrolyzer, which functions much like a fuel cell in reverse—instead of using the energy of a hydrogen molecule, like a fuel cell does, an electrolyzer creates hydrogen from water molecules. Scientists are working to make this vision a reality using the energy within hydrogen, which promises to play a major role in fostering a cleaner environment and achieving the u. S. Goal to attain net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 — in other words, removing carbon from the atmosphere at the same rate it is emitted. Hydrogen is the simplest chemical element, or type of atom.
